Maltese Falcon :: essays research papers

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett takes place in the 1930s and has a variety of mysterious charactersincluding surface-to-air missile nigra, Brigid OShaughhnessy, Joel Cairo, Mr. Gutman, and Wilmer. When OShaughnessy comes to Spade and asks him to shadow Thursby, the story takes off ona rampage of events with seemingly no relevance until they are revealed in the end. The conflict that drives the story is the unknown location of the Maltese falcon, a golden falcon of immense value. All the actions and even emotinos fo the characters are driven by the desire to obtain the falcon ormoney from obtaining the falcon. While few characters are more moreal than others, all of them have at least one fault which makes them untrustworthy greed, stupidity, or all three. The characters eliminate each other trhoguhout the story, both arrested or killed, until only Sapde is left unscathed. The book has three phases definite misunderstanding, unknown misunderstanding and comprehension. In th e first phase of the book, all the characters completely misunderstand each other. As the book progresses, the characters begin to believe that they have an understanding of each other, which complicates everyones emotions. Finally, the characters comprehend the previous emotions of the other characters and truly understand the events and the emotions of everyone.Later, Spade decides to have a meeting ith OShbaughnessy and Cairo together. Befor ethe meeting, Spade notices a youngman shadowing him. HE temporarily forgets about it and goes to the meeting in his apartment. At the meeting Cairo and OShaughnesy briefly handle of a falcon, but the doorbell interrupts them. Sam goes to the door greets two police detectives that are investigating the deaths of Thursby and Archer. The officers demand entry when they hear a scream and a shout from within,. When they reach the room of the scream, they find Cairo with a bloody face, holding a gun at OShaughnessy. In an attempt to allay suspici ion, Spade says that it is a deliberate joke. The police leave Spade alone, but they take Cairo to the station for questioning.Eventually, the mysterious young man, Wilmer confronts Spade and takes him to an apartment. HE brings Spade into a room where Mr. Gutman is sitting. They botht ry to get information without giving information. Sam decides to arrange a meeting with Cairo, OShaughnessy, Gutman, and Wilmer. Before the meeting, the captain of the boat, La Paloma, arrives at Spades office, injured but carrying what appears to be the Maltese falcon.

The Like Minds of Emerson and Douglass Essay -- Biography Biographies

The Like Minds of Emerson and Douglass Few, if any, writers of the American Renaissance period had as great an influence on contemporaries as did Ralph Waldo Emerson. He was rank that America put its mark on the literary world with its own, genuine American literature, and he launched the movement with his own works (Bode 574). Frederick Douglass was a slave of the American south when Emerson was starting out and moving up in his profession. Eventually, Douglass became Emersons fellow writer and lecturer. Douglass was present and was asked to speak for the Womens Anti-Slavery Society in prideful 1844, in Concord, where Emerson was the keynote speaker. The two men shared common ideas, as we shall see as the literary works and lives of the two men are examined. To some extent Emerson had an influence on Douglasss expressed views, but on the other hand, some of Douglasss views were a product of his own natural inclination. Emerson believed that the clement spirit could be relied on to lift man up to overcome any tribulation that might be encountered (Bode 574). Douglass inadvertantly proved Emerson right when he raise himself out of the dehumanizing bondage of slavery through his sheer will of human spirit. Douglass went on to become a hero of the slave movement after he gained his freedom. Emerson believed in a reality and a knowledge that transcended the everyday reality He also felt strongly that individuals should trust fully in the single of self (Bode 573). There is a correspondence between this self-made man of Emersons and Frederick Douglass. During the course of Douglasss career, his actions and words epitomized Emersonian ideas. Holgraves challenges Essay examples -- essays research papers fc

Challenges and changes are a part of life. Many people, especially elderly who have set views can very easily resent changes and anything that can be seen as a challenge to their ideas and the tines they remember. Magic has always been part of life unless sometimes the magic life takes on a maliciois spirit when manipulated by those who seek to bring about ruin. Society is built on traditions and revolutions to challenge others. These seemingly unconnected ideas come together in the character of Holgrave ans the secret plan of Nathaniel Hawthornes novel The House of the S hitherto Gables. Holgrave works as a force of change and challenges conceptions through his profession as a daguerreotypist. But at the same time his ideas ans actions are found on his identy os a Maule, a family, which meet its downfall by the work of a Pyncheon in Puritan days of settlement. Holgrave affects changes in the novel and works to help others see the truth of the sitution. Holgrave himself and his vi ews on the past are changed by his actions in marrying a Pyncheon. Hepzibah is scarred by the chllenges to her own conventionally and sees what holgrave stands for as a threat to her ideas but he does not frighteen her. She had orginally seen him as a well-meaning and ordwely young man (Hawthorne 63). This orginal assesment, based on his appearance, is what caused Hepzibah to grant him permission to take out a room. But as time went on she hardly knew what to make of him (63). She observed that his friends all craved new ideas , particularly those of dress. Hepzibah also tells Pheobe that he challenged many ideas in a speech that he had made annd that she believes hinm to be involved as a practioner of the nigrify arts. Pheobe becoms very frightened and inquires as to why Hepzibah allows such a lawlwss person (63) to stay and Hepzibahs response is he has a law of his own (63). rase with all these conserns Hepzibah has about holgrave she has to admit from her own contact with him that even by her formal standardshe is a quiet and orderly young man (Matthiessen 371). So even though she voices all her suspicions about holgraves morality to Pheobe, Hepizbah, in the end, still believes in the truth of her orginal feelings about Holgrave. Obamas First Inaugural Speech -- Inauguration, American Presidents

Picture this a cold January day in Washington D.C, the first African American chair is about to be inaugurated with a combined audience of over 38 million looking to be inspired. Ted Sorensen, a former speechwriter for John F. Kennedy, believes An inaugural organize is by definition a defining moment for any new president. An inaugural address is a stepping stone for each new administration because it creates a first impression the address marks the time when the president stops trying to win votes and starts taking action. Barack Obamas speech is filled with eloquent language, and it lived up to the expectations of two critics and the public. The speech, as described in the Think Again section of the New York Times was ...rather than being a sustained performance with a cumulative military group it was a framework on which a succession of verbal ornaments was hung, and we were being invited not to move forward but to stop and ponder significances only hinted at. middling words i s how a president manages to operate. Misrepresentation of Mental Illnesses :: essays research papers

Misrepresentation of Mental Illnesses by Television MediaTo eliminate the overtone representation of mental illnesses, television media needs to focus on all sides of this illness. The media needs to show that attention shortfall hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a real disorder with effective treatments. At least one in four families in the U.S. is affected by mental illnesses. Unfortunately there is no restore for this range of illnesses, which have been around for thousands of years. Of the Ameri foundation adult population, 5.4 percent have a serious mental illness. These health conditions are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, behavior, or some combination of these. They are also associated with distress and sometimes impaired functioning. In 1990 the total cost of mental health services in the U.S. was $148 billion. tally to a new report by the Mental Health Foundation, one in five children suffer from a mental health problem. Attention deficit hyperactive disorde r is a mental illness that is diagnosed mainly in young children and doesnt always disappear in adulthood. All we know is that this genetic, inherited condition ADHD is not due to brain damage at all but rather a variation in how the brain functions. Attention- deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) includes symptoms and characteristics that can be placed in one of three categories inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. These characteristics commonly leave a person with ADHD with lack of attention span, easily distracted, fidgety, struggling to persist in seated, having trouble engaging in calm activities, impatient, and talking excessively or out of turn. A new study by researchers says that hyperactive children have behavioral differences due to under active parts of their brain, a biological malfunction, rather than due to way they were brought up. This was revealed by a magnetic scanning device that allowed researchers to experience at the brains of children diagnosed w ith ADHD. These studies and statistics reinforce the claim that mental illnesses are not invented simply to justify drugging of children and a disease that needs be educated to the habitual for better understanding. Rather, ADHD is an illness that affects many people throughout their lives. This topic is often misunderstood by the public. The media and medical community need to educate the absolute side of this controversy and not just show the opposing view, which often times misrepresented by the media.According to the current President of Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA), the medication prescribed by a doctor cannot lead to drug abuse and addiction.

Vernon God Little

Explore how DBC Pierre displays his ideas to shock the audience in Vernon paragon Little. Vernon God Little, written by DBC Pierre, is a satirical young based around a massacre at a high school in Texas in which some of the students got possession of a gun and dispatch some of their teachers and fellow students. The novel is about a boy c anyed Vernon who is best friends with the main killer, Jesus. Vernon is framed as an accessory to murder and the story line follows the calibrate fall of his life. There are lots of features of the novel that come across as very shocking to the readers. For example in chapter seven, when Vernon visits a shrink Dr Goosens, he puts full trust into him, because he has a well-known profession. The psychiatrist goes on to violate Vernon which, in a way, makes Vernon loose all trust in every iodine, because if he doesnt feel safe around a doctor, he doesnt know if he will feel safe around anyone. particularly when almost everyone he used to trust has turned against him to try and frame him as an accessory to murder. The passage in chapter seven uses grotesque imagery His eupnoeic quickens with the march of his fingers, they trace a tightening circle around the rim of my hole. and a cool finger invades me. This shocks the readers because it is disturbing and because Dr Goosens is a doctor and is in a position of trust and is not expected to break this trust. DBC Pierre does this because the novel is satirical and he tries to inform the audience that people are not everything they take care and you croupet read a book by its cover. A shocking character in Vernon God Little is the journalist, lally Ledesma. We begin to see lally columns true colours as we progress through the novel as he becomes almost unbearable. At the rootage of the book, Lally is first presented when he is trying to interview Vernon on the massacre. Throughout the novel, he does many shocking things. For example, he uses Vernons mum and builds a descent w ith her, just so he can get on the inside of Vernons life and get a good story on him for the newspapers. Vernon knows that this is what Lally wants, but his mum wont believe him because shes in love with Lally. 1.Ella Bouchard chapter 13, Vernon uses her as a prostitute. 2. Taylor Uses Vernon and sets him up so she can get bullion 3. Mum doesnt care about anything important, just the look, fridges and her friends 4. Shock is to build up the satirical effect, and takes the mic out of america 5. Everyone wants to meet the american dream, 6. At the end, aver if you think it is too shocking or not, and why you think DBC Pierre wrote it like this. 3. Vernons mum has her heart set on reaching the American dream, the dream that everyone is equal, and everyone has a good job, nice house and big happy family. She doesnt want to know about what is happening to Vernon and she is very blase towards it, because all she cares about is what she and her family looks like to her friends and the public. This is shocking to the audience of Vernon God Little because its not something theyd expect to happen. The audience would expect Vernons mum to be worried about her son and trying everything in her power to get him out of jail and out of being taken to court, but instead she is in bed with Lally Ledesma, who is using her, and worrying about what fridge to buy to impress her friends. 6.Overall, I think that Vernon God Little is very shocking. DBC Pierre wrote Vernon God Little in shocking ways for a very important reason. He wanted the audience to realize that everything is not as it seems and society can be out of order at times. He also wanted them to think about if they were following the American dream or whether its all a big lie and theres no such thing. The novel might come across as unbearably shocking, but that is one feature of a satirical novel. The shock helps to reflect the fact that it is just a big joke and is trying to make a joke of American society.

Gettysburg

Charles Esquivel Pritchett History 1301 Nov. 25th 2010 Civil War Project primed(p) 50 miles northwest of Baltimore, the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was the site of the largest fight ever waged during the American Civil War. Fought in the first three days of July 1863, the competitiveness of Gettysburg resulted in a hallmark victory for the Union Army of the Potomac and successfully ended the second invasion of the North by General Robert E. lee(prenominal)s Army of Yankee Virginia. Historians have referred to the betrothal as a major turning point in the war, the High Water Mark of the Confederacy. It was also the bloodiest single battle of the war, resulting in over 51,000 soldiers killed, wounded, captured or missing(Coddington 21). On July 1, confederative forces converged on the town from west and north, driving Union defenders back through the streets to Cemetery Hill. During the night, reinforcements arrived for both sides. On July 2, lee(prenominal) attempted to envelop the Federals, first striking the Union left flank at the Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, Devils Den, and the Round conducts with Longstreets and Hills divisions, and then attacking the Union right at Culps and East Cemetery Hills with Ewells divisions.By evening, the Federals retained Little Round Top and had repulsed most of Ewells men. During the morning of July 3, the Confederate infantry were driven from their last toe-hold on Culps Hill. In the afternoon, after a preliminary artillery bombardment, Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. The Pickett-Pettigrew assault momentarily pierced the Union line but was driven back with severe casualties(Bachelder 47) . Stuarts cavalry attempted to gain the Union rear but was repulsed. On July 4, Lee began withdrawing his army toward Williamsport on the Potomac River. His train of wounded stretched more than fourteen miles. Gettysburg Campaign (June-August 1863) skirmish July 1-3, 1863 Principal Commanders Maj. Gen. Geo rge G. Meade, US Gen. Robert E. Lee, CS Forces Engaged 158,300 total (US 83,289 CS 75,054) Estimated Casualties 51,000 total (US 23,000 CS 28,000) The Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863, when a Confederate brigade searching for a badly needed supply of shoes in the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, ran into Union cavalry(Nielsen 12).After the three days of battle were over, Union forces claimed victory, although both sides suffered heavy casualties. composition Grant slowly strangled Vicksburg and Rosecrans feinted Bragg halfway across Tennessee, Lee decided to march his troops north toward Pennsylvania. There were several reasons for this bold move. The Confederate government hoped that a decisive victory on Northern soil would win foreign recognition of the Confederacy. In addition, Lee argued that an invasion of the wealthiest urban part of the North would probably lessen the pressure on Confederate forces in Tennessee and at Vicksburg.Perhaps most important, th e lush Cumberland Valley would yield food and clothing for Lees dun and hungry army(Fransanito 6). On June 3, 1863, Lee began to move his Army of Northern Virginia across the Rappahannock. Hooker, who was aware of Lees movements, shifted the Army of the Potomac northward, using it as a shield between Lee and the capital at Washington. Late in June, Hooker resigned his command, convinced that he had lost the confidence of the administration. On June 28, General George G. Meade replaced Hooker. Meade had been one of Hookers corps commanders. On July 1 improvement units of the two armies stumbled into each other near the little town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 16 km (10 mi) north of the Maryland border. Both Lee and Meade realized that a battle was unavoidable. Fighting began that day. Union troops, after early reverses, managed to hold a strategic position on Cemetery Hill. The second day, July 2, saw confused fighting on both Union flanks. Generals Longstreet and John B. Hood assau lted high ground at the Peach Orchard and Little Round Top, but by night the Federals held delineate positions. The most dramatic action of the battle came on the third day, when General George E. Pickett led a gallant but hopeless charge against the Union center, the bloody(a) angle. (Nielsen 184) Picketts drive tried to charge across an open field at Cemetery Ridge, but concentrated Union fire stopped him. The battle was a decisive Union victory, but both armies suffered very heavy losses. Meades casualties numbered 23,000 and Lees about 25,000. Lee began his retreat on July 4. To the great disappointment of President Lincoln, Meade did not dog the Confederate army and make Lee stand and fight(Coddington 12).By July 14 the Confederate commander had brought the remnant of his army back to the safety of Virginia. Gettysburg had been a severe smite for the South, both in terms of men lost and the armys morale. In November 1863 President Lincoln dedicated a national cemetery to t hose who had died in the Battle of Gettysburg. His speech, cognise as the Gettysburg Address, became famous as an expression of the democratic spirit and reconfirmed Lincolns intention to reunite the country.

Characterization of Nucleic Acids Essay

This paper is an analysis conducted on Nucleic Acids by dint of a variety of judges unique(predicate)ally, Dische, Murexide, Wheeler-Johnson and Phosphate Tests in order to exemplify structural features of nucleic acids as easily as identify the principle involved in each chemical rise. Different procedures and different test compounds were applied, and results were noted as for changes in colors of fall downs or solutions. For Dische Test, light blue was obtained for RNA and dark violet for DNA. For Murexide Test, a yellow layer was obtained with a mixture of red color and eventually became yellow or orange after addition of warm water. For John-Wheeler Test, a violet set up was obtained and lastly for Phosphate Test, a yellow pass was obtained. Keywords Nucleic Acids, Dische Test, Murexide Test, Phosphate Test, Wheeler-Johnson Test1.IntroductionThe audition solely revolved on the identification of the different structural features that make up the complex structure of nucle ic acids as well as its characterization through specific chemical tests namely Dische Test, Murexide Test, Wheeler-Johnson Test and Phosphate Test. Upon performance of the tests mentioned, the principles involved were identified and stated based on the results obtained from the investigate.2. MethodologyMaterials such as water bathtub, test thermionic vacuum tubes, evaporating dish, test compounds and reagents were gathered and prepared. In Dische Test, ten (10) drops of test compound and Diphenylamine wasplaced in a test tube and heated in simmering water bath for ten minutes. Color change on the solution was noted. In Murexide Test, ten(10) drops of Guanidine was placed in a test tube. Concentrated Nitric Acid(HNO3) was added to the test compound and thusly brought to water bath to dry until a solid mixture is obtained. at once the mixture dried up, ten(10) drops of Potassium Hydroxide(KOH) was used to wet the reagent and then later on put to boiling water bath again to dry. After addition of KOH, color change was noted and this time, water was added to wet the mixture and put to boiling water bath again to dry. Any color changeto the precipitate was noted. For Wheeler-Johnson Test, ten(10) drops of Barium HyrdroxideBa(OH)2 and Bromine Water placed in a test tube and once the mixture turned red, it was brought to boiling water bath to expel excess Bromine. More than ten(10) drops of Barium HyrdroxideBa(OH)2 was added in excess and color change of the precipitate was noted. In Phosphate Test, twenty(20) drops of test compounds were placed in a porcelain crucible and two(2) drops of Potassium Nitrate(KNO3) plus spatula fusion mixture of Sodium Carbonate(NA2CO3) was added to the test compound. Mixture was heated using a Bunsen burner until the mixture turned into gray or white. After cooling the mixture, 5 mL of distilled water was added to the reagent and was transferred to a test tube acidified by ten(10) drops of concentrated Nitric Acid(HNO3). Litmus p aper was then used to check for acidity and twenty(20) drops of ammonium molybdate solution was added to the reagent & warmed in water bath. Once warmed, the mixture was allowed to stand for ten minutes and formation as well as color of the precipitate was noted. After performing all the tests needed, results were tabulated and analyzed accordingly.3. Results and preachingDische Test clearly indicates that DNA can be identified chemically with the Dische diphenylamine test. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid) are aldehydes, which reacts with the compound, diphenylamine, to produce a blue-colored compound. A positive test for DNA is indicated by ablue color change. This procedure involves chemical hydrolysis of DNA when heated in acid, the reaction requires a deoxyribose sugar and therefrom is specific for DNA. Under these conditions, the 2-deoxyribose is converted to w-hydroxylevulinyl. This resulted to a blue solution indicating the presence of protein in DNA.Mu rexide Test on the other hand gave out a yellow precipitate which indicates the presence of uric acid visible in the Guanine samples. It is a double-ringed, crystalline organic base, C5H4N4, not known to occur naturally, and is a form of uric acid heterocyclic in nature. In the Wheeler-Johnson Test, the evidence for a positive result is a violet solution and this clearly shows the concise result of the experiment performed. Cytosine was used in the test which is a Pyrimidine derivative heterocyclic in nature.Phosphate Test gave out a yellow result for the precipitate which simply means that a phosphodiester bond exists between DNA and RNA between the 3 Carbon atom and the 5 Carbon of the ribose sugar.4. ConclusionFrom the experiment, it is therefore meant that through specific tests, it is possible to characterize structural features of nucleic acid whether it be a helix, string loop or miniband. That certain compound complements the test to be performed and will result to a concise data if performed correctly. That DNA differs from RNA in the sense that only Uracil is found in RNA and thymine is exclusively located in the DNA though Adenine, Guanine, and Cytosine are both found on DNA & RNA..5. Access to the property is at the gravel driveway to the left and I made entry into the Truckee was made with the front door after documenting photos of the outside of the social structure. The come off occurred during the day, which was bright and sunny with temperature at degrees, there was also a slight breeze at or so MPH from the n/ w. The breeze would induct been blowing against the backside corner of the home. Felt sure it was a problem with the house, complained several times to the landlord about problems with no response, complained of several welling Issues. Salad she was a smoker but sta ted put cigarettes totally out while doing her work. 0-1 John had agreed with Susan confirming the issues with the wiring. He also stood behind his wife and said she was always safe with her cigarettes Observations Data collection began with photos universe interpreted beginning outside and moving indoors. No smoke alarms or water sprinklers have been noted. Pictures should always be labeled when providing evidence and these photos will be numbered In this report. Upon entry of the structure, the majority of fire damage was concentrated to the main living room area which indicates that this is the point of origin. This room contained a heavily burned lounge and table conterminous to the lounge as shown in pictures 12- 14, the major fuel sources in the room. The fire moved up the wall and across the lining, as shown in pictures 6 & At the front door, the heat and smoke began to roll-down and cause damage, as seen In picture 10. Two mattresses are In an The windows in many of the photos remained disagreeable with burned shades which means the fire did not have adequate ventilation to grow rapidly through the structure. The windows which are open may have been opened during suppression of the fire or immediately afterwards to ventilate the structure. One interesting observation in photo 2 is the power box which has no meter, meaning there is no power set up by the power company to this structure. Unless the occupants are stealing power, then an electrical fire undersurface be ruled out. No generator can be seen and no drop cords were photographed, so the theory is that there is no power to the structure (Morris, 4/23/14). Opinions/Theories The point of origin being in the living room with the heaviest damage focused on the final stage of the sofa and the table next to the sofa.Based on the statements made by the occupants three hypotheses exist as to the cause of the fire 1 . Based on the severity of the damage to the end of the sofa in photos 12-14 & 17-19 and the tenements made by the occupants regarding the smoking of cigarettes, a smoldering cigarette fell into the cushions of the sofa and later ignited. In the incipient stage, the temperature had not begun to rise yet and a plume of hot gases rises from the flame (p. 55). Pictures 15-17 show alligator of the wood in the sofa at the one end which also indicates this is where the fire originated (p. 281).The fuels burned and the heat moved toward the top of the room, this explains the blackening of the ceiling. With the lack of ventilation, the fire did not spread quickly which provided refreshers enough time to act and suppress. 2. Also, based on the statements made by the occupants regarding smoking cigarettes, I would want to know more about how they normally discarded/dispose of their cigarette butts. be they dumping an ashtray in a trashcan inside or outside? Could there have been an ashtray on the table next to the sofa which contained either a remedy lit cigarette or a sm oldering cigarette? If so, what type of ashtray? Metal, glass, heavy or lightweight? If any windows were open and the ashtray was light enough, could it have winded off or loon then cigarette off onto the sofa and ignited the fire? This is a working theory because there are questions which contract to be answered. 3. Going on the assumption that there is no electricity to the home, it is highly possible there may have been a burning certificate of deposit either on the window sill behind the sofa or on the table next to the sofa which may have fallen or tilted towards the sofa which ignited the sofa. With statistics showing that 7 out of 10 people in America burn candles and the added question regarding power in this structure, it is a workable theory that a Andre accidentally ignited this fire (p. 173). In photos 12, 13, 19 & 20, the window directly behind the end of the sofa which is mostly burned being the origin of the fire, is also heavily blackened from soot and has a darker U burn pattern on the right lower side (p. 258-263). There is no physical evidence to suspect an incendiary cause of the fire to the structure. The evidence and observation supports an accidental cause.Documentation/Evidence A total of 21 photos are attached to the report of the outside and inside of the structure. Close up photos of the point of origin are included. Where recovered, where sent for analysis, and any special notes are included. Character Cannot Be Developed in Ease and Quiet Critical Lens Essay

Critical Lens Essay Helen Keller once said Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only by the experience of streak and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved. In other words what this quotation means is what individuals go through in life makes them what they are. Individuals have to go through good and bad to learn love and strength. Two examples that support the validity of this quotation are nighttime by Elie Wiesel and The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. In dark by Elie Wiesel, the protagonist, Eliezer, is taken to Birkenau during World War Two with his father and is separated from the oddment of his family. When seeing such horrific conditions in the concentration camp, Eliezer starts to lose faith in God and in himself, to that degree as his character builds, he starts to ripe(p) as time went on. Eliezers experiences educate individuals that life in not always far some individuals lose faith and g ive up yet some, like Eliezer, gain strength from their experiences and build up their character. In The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the protagonist, Esperanza, lives on Mango Street with her family and struggles with events where she is faced with bad responsibilities and maturity. In the vignette Red Clowns, she is taken advantage of and experiences an act of nature where she is transformed into a woman. Esperanza shows that overcoming catastrophes make you a stronger person. With such experiences comes strength and maturity. In both Night by Elie Wiesel and The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the protagonists, Esperanza and Eliezer are faced with events that make them stronger and better people. They are two examples of individuals that support the validity of the ingeminate that Helen Keller once said Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through the experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition i nspired and success achieved. The God Must Be Crazy Movie Analysis

The only students there are a crop of rustic and austere people the Bushmen. They lead a simple yet spirited life in their own paradise. However a bottle dropping from the civilized world encroached upon peaceful and complacent family life. In the wake Of discovering its unhomogeneous facilities they began to scramble for it to satiate their own needs thus stirring anger jealousy hate and violence. Therefore Xi the first person who had found the bottle decided to throw this evil thing to the end of the world. In the course of his journey he name across Andrew Steen and Kate Thompson who eventually fell in love with distributively other. Meanwhile a brutal Sambas gang was subdued by Mr.. Steen with the help of Xi. It is plausible that this comedy film is sheerer a good expression. This film directly demonstrates its imperative and pleasant dimensions to its viewers. Indeed this film is imbued with comic elements. I was amazed when Xi had misgivings about how such a small bottle on the telescope could rush a capacity of so many people. I was bursting into laughter the moment Mr..Steen steered towards the fence which blocked his way and he responded awkwardly in the presence of Mrs.. Thompson assay to pick up the bottles falling from the table. Was giggling when Jack drove away his bus under which lurked Xi and Midi to elude the beast chasing after him. However that is far from enough. It is true that the aesthetic effect of a comedy is laugh which is the part and parcel of the whole image but it is not the whole story the moralistic lying behind the laugh is the essence of the comedy. In keeping with Iliad which was composed by Homer a renownedGreek poet and depicted numerous valiant soldiers on the unmatchable hand and conveyed the idea of heroism and humanism inspiring people from generation to generation on the other the film The gods must be crazy has too represented the educational significance of a comedy edifying and reshaping viewers. After watc hing this film for a second time I come to a deeper understanding of this comedy that the comedy elements are not merely scheduled to create laughter instead they are planned to sing praise for Xis bad-mannered and rustic mind to give the thumbs up for Mr..Steins grit and integrity while giving the thumbs down against Jacks hypocrisy. More importantly I hold that this comedy movie has a social implication for our modern life. Fraught with fierce competition due to the globalization people are progressively deprived of an air of license and dedicating themselves to a dreary commitment to mean ambitions or love of comfort. We become desperate social climbers and have devotions to material things. Therefore, bottles-?material things constitute the center hertz of our life.

Immanuel Kant Essay

1 Introduction Have you ever watched a group debate an honourable tight fitting given a cross case study with several different variations to the story? It is fascinating to watch. al ab come forth of the individuals feel so strongly about being right they allowing argue until they get their indicate across. Others waffle and try to look at the situation from a variety of perspectives. Given a particular Case Study ground on terms of confidentiality, this paper compares the basis of goodity under cardinal alternative honourable systems Utilitarianism and Kantianism. We will explore the theory behind each ethical system, describe the f defends of the Case, and say a cast of ethical action using both ethical systems, and the signifi layaboutce of this dilemma. I chose to date the Utilitarianism and Kantianism ethical systems because at times they seem diabolic on the wholey opposed based on the theoretical argument behind choosing a particular action. Yet, in many case s the chosen action is the same. For this particular case on confidentiality, a personal race attempts to complicate how to determine the mor aloney sic action. I explore this correlativity by comparing Utilitarianism and Kantianism.Utilitarianism uses a relatively straightforward cost-benefit epitome where the calculation is indifferent to persons and relationships (Dombrowski 2000248). Consequently, when using a Utilitarian system to examine what ethical action is appropriate everyone is on equal footing (Dombrowski 2000248). This is reasonably of a simplistic view of how individuals make determinations however, it is a simple view that allows you to make a close to unbiased decision. A decision non based on rank, status, wealth, race, gender, or personal relationship (Dombrowski 2 2000248).Similar to Utilitarianism, Kantianism would also negate the significance of any personal relationships. The Kantian would do unto a nonher(prenominal)s, as they would apply to trea ting you. The one widely distributed style to act should carry from person to person regardless of your personal relationship to that person. Let us explore the similarities and differences between these two ethical theories. Next, we will take a close look at the facts of one particular Case Study where personal relationships do come into play. Then, we will compare how a Utilitarian and a Kantian might act and why. What motivates the decision-makers under each incorrupt system? 2 Comparing Theory 2. 1 Theory Utilitarianism 2. 1. 1 Pleasure versus Pain Utilitarianism is a somewhat general term for a variety of perspectives that all generally fall under the pretension of this theoretical stance. In any case, I will attempt to summarize the major theoretical viewpoints of this ethical system. For the nearly part, Utilitarianism recognizes two dictatorials in the world put out and pleasure. Moral law follows the Principle of Utility, in other words, what motivates human beings.T hey found that keen has priority over the Right (Justice) (Griffin 2005, personal communication) and they make ethical decisions by determining the greatest useful goodness for the greatest estimate of plenty (Dombrowski 200054). Good equals happiness (pleasure) and alternatively bad equals pain or displeasure and has no value. Utilitarianism determines the right or correct action based on a formula that shows which action results in maximized good (happiness/pleasure). Maximized good takes into account all those individuals moved(p) by the actions under consideproportionn.2. 1. 2 Cost-Benefit Analysis Utilitarianism simplifies moral law to a quantitative calculation that determines ethical choice Total Pleasure Total Pain = Total Utility (Griffin 2005 personal communication). Utilitarianism uses a cost-benefit analysis to decide whether we tell or do not tell. We determine what is ethically 3 correct with an objective and quantitative measure of utilitarian goodness. measure it for the appropriate number of people, compare it to measures of ill effects for the remaining people, plug it all into an algorithm, and calculate the solution (Dombrowski 2000). Utilitarianism, born out of the technological and scientific revolution, uses a scientific approach to ethics.Theoretically, Utilitarianism does not take into account whose happiness is at stake and the action with the highest heart and soul utility is the correct action. 2. 2 Theory Kantianism 2. 2. 1 Sense of Duty A sense of concern is the guiding principle to Kantian theory. Ethics does not come from a higher authority nor does it cuss on the individual to weigh the competing interests of the participants in an ethical dilemma. Unlike Utilitarianism, Kants ethical system represents a universal prostrate imperative rule of ethics. The Categorical imperative is an expression of the moral law.The imperative is the correct, right, or good action taken in a particular situation. A categorical impera tive denotes an absolute, prostrate necessary that allows no exceptions, and is both required and justified as an end in itself, not as a means to some other end the opposite of a hypothetical imperative (www. wikipedia. org). In Kants Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals, he outlines the Categorical Imperative in trey different airs (www. wikipedia. org) 2. 2. 1. 1 Universal Law formulation Act yet according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law. 2.2. 1. 2 Humanity or give up in Itself formulation Act in such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end. 2. 2. 1. 3 Kingdom of Ends formulation alone maxims as proceeding from 4 our own hypothetical making of law ought to harmonize with a possible realm of ends. 2. 2. 2 Reason versus Happiness Kantianism recognizes Reason, not happiness or pleasure, is the foundation of moral law. Reason is the capability of humans, which enables us to choose the principle, or rule on which we act (Griffin 2005, personal communication). The categorical imperative is an underlie moral system based on Reason, the integral link independent of a particular condition it is universal. To understand the basis of morality (the existence of a moral law) you must look for it in the capacitor for reason and not in the capacity for pleasure and pain. The very foundation of Kantianism is that you must treat people the way they would consent to you treating them the same way. Your act is universal with no contradictions. Kant considers immorality as the product of individuals move to create a different standard for themselves compared to the rest of humanity.Immorality ignores the categorical imperative. The Right comes before the Good (happiness) in other words, there are moral constraints on what one may do to fight happiness. One has a duty to obey the mor al law, and the moral law is not determined by figuring out what promotes happiness (Griffin 2005, personal communication). You cannot reduce humans to meer means treating someone is a way in which they would not consent. 3 Case Study Facts 3. 1 Case Study Overview You are assiduous as a technical communicator by Caduceus Company, a major provider of software systems for the health do industry.Currently, you are working on help-desk instructions for a new software system that operates from a database compile from all the records of all the hospitals, clinics, HMOs, laboratories, and physicians in your state. These records carry a good deal of highly personal training on patients and are, of course, private and confidential. The revelation of some of this data to the wrong people could be seriously negative for those patients. Improper release of this information could, for example, limit their employability, damage their reputations, or re stark their access to health 5 insura nce at affordable rates.Part of your labor, in fact is to ensure that confidentiality is maintained by all who use the system while preventing access to those who might misuse it. Just yesterday, you learned of some floor information. While observing the typical daily operation of the help-desk staff in resolving users questions, you recognized the describe of one of the knobs called up on a screen. It is the name of your cousin-germans fiance, and the entry indicates that he has well-tried positive for human immunodeficiency virus and has received counseling about HIV and AIDS from a local clinic. You and your cousin are very close, and you are certain that she is unaware that her intended spouse has tested positive for HIV. The conglutination is only a few weeks away. She would be highly endangered after marriage but also in their current relations without this knowledge. Do you reveal this information to your cousin but violate the seclusion and confidentiality that you ha ve sworn yourself to and are legally obliged to maintain? Or do you keep the information to yourself but jeopardize the health and life of your cousin by preserving the deception by her fiance (Dombrowsky 2000238). 3.2 Choices or honorable Action As I understand the case, there are really only three different courses of action to choose from. 3. 2. 1 Do not say anything at all 3. 2. 2 Reveal the truth to your cousin 3. 1. 1. 2. 1 Talk to your cousin 3. 1. 1. 2. 2 Write an unknown letter to your cousin 3. 2. 3 Confront the potential fiance 3. 1. 1. 3. 1 Talk to the fiance and explain why he needs to tell your cousin 3. 1. 1. 3. 2 Threaten fiance if you do not tell my cousin I will tell 4 Comparing the Application between Ethical Systems 4. 1 To compare the moral significance of the above stated fact, I will look at the theory behind Utilitarianism and Kantianism to determine which action is the correct action.4. 1. 1 Application Utilitarianism 4. 1. 1. 1 According to Dombrowski ( 2000), he suggests Utilitarianism is the most reasonable ethical approach to take due to the simplistic nature of the principles of the Utilitarian moral law. However, he also recognizes how it is hard to apply measurable, objective costs to the loss of the technicians job, professional reputation, pain, suffering, go against trust, and a broken relationship (Dombrowski 2000248). In any case, I attempt to illustrate through the succeeding(a) Table (Table 1) what the Utilitarian application may look like.Table 1. Utilitarianism Cost-Benefit Analysis Choices thorough PLEASURE TOTAL PAIN = TOTAL UTILITY 1. Do not say anything at all Keep job Cousin gets HIV and dies Cousins kids get HIV Cousins marriage dissolves oodles of pain by cousin = low utility 2. Reveal the truth to your cousin Cousin does not shrivel HIV and lives Lose job Company loses credibility You can not get a job Lots of pain by technical communicator but cousin does not die = mean(a) to high utility 3. Confront the potential fiance Keep job Cousin does not beat HIV.Fiance is upset by having to discuss with cousin Happiness for technical communicator and cousin, a little pain for fiance = high utility 4. 1. 1. 2 Examining the Table, you can see I have outlined three separate 6 choices, determined the total pleasure, total pain, and total utility. I was unable to determine an objective, absolute number to measure each factor, however, I did rank the total utility by low, medium, and high. As you can see, if the technical communicator chooses not to say anything at all, she would keep her job, but her cousin would most definitely contract HIV and her cousin could die from it or one of her kids could contract the disease. In any case, the cousins marriage is most definitely going to dissolve once she realizes out that her husband was not open with her from the beginning. Consequently, I be the total utility to LOW UTILITY due to the extensive pain the cousin would ultimately endure. The so uthward choice was for the technical communicator to reveal the truth to her cousin either directly or anonymously. The pleasure obtained from this decision would result in the technical communicators cousin not contracting HIV and living (as a result of this situation). However, the technical communicator would probably lose her job, the federation could lose its credibility and that could effect the jobs of other company employees, and the technical communicator may not be able to find another job because she breached her trust with the client and her company. The total utility, therefore, results in a lot of pain for the technical communicator. Fortunately, the cousin would not contract HIV and increase her risk of dying. Due to the nature of the utility death versus life, I ranked this decision at MEDIUM to HIHGH UTILITY because the cousin would experience a great deal of happiness that would far choke the unequal but opposite pain of the technical communicator. The third choic e, confront the potential fiance, would result in 7 pleasure for the technical communicator because she could keep her job. In addition, the cousin is able to nurse herself from contracting HIV. In contrast, the fiance would be upset by having to discuss this difficult discover with his new wife. Due to these circumstances, I ranked this choice as having VERY HIGH UTILITY. The technical communicator is happy, keeps her job, and does not lose her cousin. Her cousin does not contract a life black disease.Yet, the fiance experiences discomfort with having to discuss this relatively important issue with his new wife. Consequently, a Utilitarianist would find this last choice to be the best and most ethically correct choice. Dombrowski (pg. 248) points out how difficult it is to reduce this case to a simple cost-benefit utility analysis for a number of reasons. Yet, the most poignant reason is the inability to neutralize the scenario and avoid the personal relationship the technician has with her cousin. Theoretically, the entire cost-benefit ratio should be the same no matter the personal relationship. However, I suspect your ethical action would inclining in a different direction should your motivations be driven by the patients partner. If you do not know the patients partner why would you risk your job, home life, and economic security measure for someone you do not even know. Is it really for the greater good? If so, why not find out everyone who has AIDS and post it on street corners? I am baffled by this strict compliance with the Utilitarian perspective. 4. 1. 2 Application Kant 4. 1. 2. 1 Kant would argue that we should act as we would expect others to act toward us and in way that should have universal applicability (pg. 247). You must treat people the way they would consent to you treating them the same way. Given that this decision could 8 result in a life-threatening situation, Dombrowski argues that of course the cousin would want to know and woul d consent to treating them the same way. Dombrowski suggests that this is quite probably a universal ethical law. Yet, Dombrowski also recognizes that most people probably would agree that the seriousness of the stakes so heavily speck the ethical scales against the side of blind compliance with the law that the ethical judgement to disclose should be concealment on all people in such situations (pg.247). In this interpretation, the seriousness and/or life threatening properties of the case motivate the Kantian. This interpretation suggests that the Kantian is obligated to the cousin and not to the patient not because the cousin is a relative or has a special personal relationship to the technician. The technician is obligated to the moral universal law and would tell anyone should they find out. However, Kantian Moral law also says a promise should be kept. So then, the technicians promise to her profession could take precedence over what appears to be the obvious categorical im perative.Kant might also agree with an ethical course of action where the technician approaches the potential fiance and makes it clear that if he does not tell, she will tell her cousin. In this variation, the categorical imperative recognizes that revealing this information to the cousin is in clear violation with the law. By approaching the potential fiance it also reduces the possible consequences because the outcome will ultimately result in your cousin finding out but not through you. As a result, the Kantian does not violate the law but also does what is ethically correct.9 5 Conclusion To summarize, Utilitarianism is an ethical system that proposes that the greatest useful goodness for the greatest number of people should be our guiding principle when making ethical decisions. In contrast, Kantianism suggests that the morally correct action is an absolute, unconditional requirement that allows no exceptions, and is both required and justified as an end in itself, not as a means to some other end (www. wikipedia. org). In the Case of Confidentiality, both Utilitarianism and Kantianism found that the best and most correct choice was to confront the fiance. In this scenario, the presumed authority for methods & solutions is the profession meaning that personal ethics & worship do not have prima facie authority. Yet, for the Kantian I think it is hard to figure out how to prioritize the relationships between competing duties (expression of law) professional promise versus an individual ethics. I also wonder how your promise to your family to protect them and keep them safe plays into this account. However, the Utilitarianism cost-benefit analysis revealed how this ethical tradition takes into account all who are affected by the actions under consideration. As for the Kantian conclusion, the choice represented a universal expression of moral law. In both cases, the personal relationship did not and should not come into play as a momentous fact. But I w onder, how this could possibly ever be the case. REFERENCES 2000 Dombrowski, Paul. Compare and Contrast Readings Essay

You wear suffered before as I adjudge suffered, maybe not exactly as me, barely you have experienced a type of scathe. Mary Rowlandson shows us what suffering is in her book c every last(predicate)ed A memorial of the Captivity, by creating a character who loses her six year old child due to an attack in her town Lancaster and constantly being moved. Another author, Olaudah Equiano, writes a story approximately another type of suffering in his book The interest Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, by telling readers about him being kidnapped now from his dental plate and being brought into buckle downry. By reading these excerpts readers rear see different types of suffering and how the characters handle them. The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano articulates suffering better because there are events that most people would know about and tells how people around him are dealing with the changes.Equianos narrative takes place in the 1800s, when slave ry shekelsed to wrench popular. He talks of his self becoming a slave when he was still a kid. After, dowry as a slave for different people in Africa, being detached from his family, and getting shipped bump off to stay a slave but in a fortune country, he did not convey belligerent. I did not know what this could mean, and indeed I thought these people were full of nothing but magical arts, (Equiano 59). Equiano esteeming the men that are about to enslave him are full of magic proves how two-year-old he is, too young to be a slave. A child being a slave for the rest of his or her life is a horrific way to spend ones childhood. He has suffered all of his life, beginning with the day he was taken away from his home but after all this he did not seek revenge, he became an author.Rowlandsons narrative speaks on the American Indians being distant from their native land by English people. When a reader starts reading the excerpt, one might think it is only about a woman losing h er children butonce you look at the details you testament see how the events she describes relate to the event of Americans kicking American Indians off their land. The occasion (as I thought) of their woful at this time, was, the English army, it being near and following them (Rowlandson 39). The reason why readers did not know of the event from the start of the story is because the main character did not know why either. The quote gives us confirmation that the moving to different places is because of the English army, Americans, taking over their property .Both of these authors did a great job at helping readers view different types of suffering and how people handled it. Mary Rowlandson, the main character handles the suffering of losing her children and her home by staying connected with God, as I would. Olaudah Equiano, the main character of The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, suffers by getting stolen from his home and brought into slavery. By looking at how Equiano deals with being a slave, it is like he just accepts what is happening and does not try to change it. Although Olaudah Equiano does not do much to change his life as a slave, he does a better job at explaining his sufferings to a point where people can relate or know a little background of the event.
